As fall winds down into and through November, it’s time to use the fresh fruit that is still available here in the Independence, MO area: APPLES! One of our closest orchards with a farm market is Sibley Orchards and Cider Mill. When you stay with us at Hawthorn Bed & Breakfast, we suggest that you visit the Farm Market (seasonal hours; now open only on Saturdays and Sundays). It’s a wonderful day trip when added to Fort Osage National Historic Landmark, built in 1808 under the direction of William Clark (of the famous Lewis & Clark explorers). It’s an easy 35-minute drive from the B&B. Plan a November getaway while the fall foliageis still putting on a show and include a tour of various historic sites in our area.
At Sibley Orchards & Cider Mill, you can find wonderful fruits, vegetables, their homemade cider, pickles, fruit preserves, and local honey and honeycomb. Currently, they have Jonathan, Golden Delicious, and Fuji apples available – all great varieties for cooking and baking! A versatile, seasonal vegetable still available is acorn squash. The Orchard also provides some great recipes for the fruits they produce.
This is one of Wendy’s favorite fall desserts (besides Wendy’s incredible apple pie of course) that we serve at private dining events here at Hawthorn Bed & Breakfast.

¾ cup quick cooking oatmeal
¾ cup brown sugar
½ cup flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ cup butter (not tub butter)
Pare apples and slice thin.
Arrange in greased 8 x 8 casserole dish.
Combine oatmeal, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon then cut in butter.
Sprinkle over apples.
Bake 35-40 minutes at 350 degrees

We still have dates open for luncheons and dinners throughout November and December. You could include this special apple crisp dessert on the menu for your special get-together!
