The 2018 Major League Baseball Season opened earlier this month and we are excited for the Royals this year. The Kansas City Royals are celebrating 50 years as a team in our nearby favorite city located just 4 miles from our B&B. We can almost hear the crack of the bats at “The K” (Kauffman Stadium).
Kauffman Stadium (aka: “The K”) is home field for the Kansas City Royals. The stadium opened in 1973 under the name of Royals Stadium. Before the 2004 opener, major changes were made to the outfield fences that made this stadium one of the most spacious parks in major league play. “The K” was again expanded in 2012 because they were hosting the Major League Baseball All-Star game that year. At that time, the Royals Hall of Fame was built. “The K” boasts spectacular water fountains near right-center field and some cascading water features near left field too. The facility was renamed in 1993 in honor of Ewing M. Kauffman, owner of the Royals from 1969 (at the time the team was established) until his death 1993. When Kauffman Stadium was built, the design and amenities were ahead of their time and it is still known as one of major league’s most beautiful stadiums!
To celebrate the 50-year milestone, the Royals are having a special celebration weekend each month including special giveaways and hosting special alumni from teams through the 50 years of the team’s history. Looking ahead to the weekend of May 19 & 20, 2018, the Royals will host the New York Yankees. Special giveaways for that weekend include a Lou Piniella Replica Jersey and a George Brett Pine Tar bobble-head. During the special June weekend (June 16 & 17, 2018), the focus will be on the fan traditions. Tail gating, “Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey” and other “superstitions” from loyal Royals fans! In July, the special celebratory weekend will focus on all the giveaways at home games for 50 years. How is that bobble-head made anyway? What were the most unique KC giveaways? On Sunday, July 22, 2018, the giveaway will be a special 50thAnniversary Coffee Mug. During the weekend of August 11 & 12, 2018, we remember the 1985 World Series Kansas City Team! You can get a 1985 World Series Champions Replica Trophy on Saturday and on Sunday, get a Gold Threads Replica Jersey. In the early fall celebrate the Royals in the community. The Royals have given back to Kansas City in so many ways. Come to the ball game on either September 15th or 16th, 2018 to help thank the team that still changes lives in their community.
Our Kansas City Royals are not just major league baseball players – they are members of our community and volunteer in many ways to support various charities in and around the area. The Royals fight cancer using a number of initiatives. Some of these cancer-fighting initiatives include The Alex Gordon Classic youth baseball tournament, Braden’s Hope for Childhood Cancer, Susan G. Komen Kansas City, and Bandage Drives. There are a number special baseball game days that feature cancer awareness including Men’s Cancer Awareness on Father’s Day, Pediatric Cancer Awareness Night, and Royals Family Lemonade Stands that support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
We’ve given you lots of reasons to purchase tickets to a Kansas City Royals Baseball game – and we did not even discuss the game of baseball! Come to Kansas City to hear the crack of the bat, watch our Royals in action, support cancer research and treatments, and see the beautiful stadium we call “The K”. Make your reservation to stay at Hawthorn Bed & Breakfast and plan to hear the umpire yell “Play Ball”!
