Letter written by Bess Truman to Rebekah Field Evans on August 23, 1945, eleven days after Franklin D. Roosevelt died and Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President. Mr. and Mrs. Evans had long been acquainted with both the Wallace and Truman families. When Mrs. Evans died in 1957, Mr. Truman attended her graveside service at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence.
